The Learning Lab at Hillsboro Elementary School is a new title for an old program that has been around for many years. It was established to replace the old title of "Resource Classes" at our school. It is a place where students come to learn in his or her least restrictive environment, whether that is actual instruction in the lab or inclusion instruction in the homeroom classroom.

   The lab is staffed with three certified teachers and two teaching assistants. Students who attend The Learning Lab receive instruction in enrichment, English, math, reading, spelling, and study skills. The students may visit the lab for one or more of these areas. Students may come to the lab for 30 minutes per day to 6 hours per day depending on the needs of the individual student. The staff meets these needs by extra help, modifications or direct instruction in the deficit subject area/s. 

   The staff uses various modalities to promote learning. We use the Wilson Reading Program, the Accelerated Reader Program, the Saxon Math Series, the Shurley English Method and various computer programs to teach our students in their deficit areas. Modifications are made by the staff to each of these individual programs to best meet the needs of each individual student. The lab promotes individualized and small group instruction. This appears to work well for these students. Progress and success is being made in The Learning Lab at Hillsboro Elementary School.
