Nancy Dickinson, Librarian

Hillsboro Elementary School has a library of over 8000 volumes administered by a full-time librarian.  All students in grades K-5 attend library class once a week for 45 minutes.  During class time students may read books or magazines, listen to stories or booktalks, build library skills, research topics, use the Internet, take Accelerated Reader tests, or check out books.
Accelerated Reader is a vital part of our reading program, and the library supports AR with books and a store where students may spend their points.  We have over 7000 AR tests.  In addition to regularly scheduled library class time, students may also access the library at any time during the school day in order to borrow Accelerated Reader books or to take tests.  We also have a summer library program which enables students to take tests and continue to develop their reading skills during summer vacation.
Computers play an important role in our library.  Not only can students take AR tests, but also our circulation is on computer, as is our catalog.  We have four computers that provide Internet access that students may use for research or just for fun!  We also have interactive books that students may use.  Students are instructed in how to use the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) and we also have reference materials on CD.
Students in grades 1-3 participate in the Volunteer State Book Award each year, and students in grades 4 and 5 may participate if they so desire.  We also have a memorial/honor book program that is available for parents, teachers, and community members to use to commemorate special people or events.  The Birthday Book Club gives parents an opportunity to donate a book to the library while honoring their child’s birthday at the same time.
We believe the library is an integral part of a child's education and that every student should be able to use the library whenever it is appropriate to his/her needs.  The school library exists to support the curriculum and to provide research and reading opportunities for students.
