Kimberly Nicole Thorington*
I
am a diamond-filled rock concealed to the naked eye but a world of beauty to be
discovered inside. My name derives
from the depths of an African town.
Royalty
awaits me, for my name is crowned by the royal meadows. My name flies high on the wings of
butterflies, yet my name speaks of humility.
Born
in the Chinese year of the tiger, I am strong. My name speaks loud in three different syllables. It identifies me as the purr of a tiger
hums a harmony in tune with heaven’s melodies.
I
am a leader. I am dominant. My name is synonymous to chief in the
Celtic language. My peers uproot
my name by slicing it to one-third.
My heart is crushed. My
name shall always be connected until the number eight breaks its path.
My
name is Kimberly. It always has
been and will forevermore be, not Kim, Kimmie, or Kimbo. Those are just blemishes of the true
meaning of my name. My name is
Kimberly.

I Am Life
I am from life,
Generations that toiled the soil.
Uncle, grandfather, father, and son,
Beginning at morn and working till day is done.
I am from life.
A small seed becomes planted.
The earth holds it as a child,
Waiting patiently for the cycle to complete.
I am from life.
Nature provides sun and rain.
I protect, weed, and feed.
Time will then complete the cycle of the seed.
I am from life.
The peak is near and finish in sight.
Hours spent reaping and gathering in the harvest moonlight,
The hum of machinery heard in the night.
I am from life.
All ages feeling satisfaction of a job well done,
Uncle, grandfather, father, and son.
The gift of earth. . .the cycle of life.
