TEXT:
Glencoe Geometry
PREREQUISITE: Algebra I
COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Geometry is a course that uses problem
situations, physical models, and appropriate technology to investigate
geometric concepts, relationships, and systems. Problem-solving situations provide all students an environment
that promotes communication, engages student reasoning, and fosters connections
within mathematics, to other disciplines, and to the real world. Students will use physical models to
represent, explore, and develop abstract concepts. The use of appropriate technology will help students apply
mathematics in an increasingly technological world. The concepts/topics emphasized in the course include measurement,
geometric patterns, coordinate geometry, two- and three-dimensional figures,
congruence, similarity, and transformational geometry.
SUPPLIES:
Bring your textbook, notebook, paper, pencil, and eraser
to class every day! You will need a three-ring loose-leaf binder.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned daily with few
exceptions and assignments will be posted in the classroom as well as on this
website. It must be completed in pencil and headed with the date,
lesson number, textbook page and problem numbers (if
assignment is from the textbook). You must show your work.
A list of answers will not be acceptable. If you are unable to work a
problem, you must write down some information to receive credit. You will
be given time at the end of most class periods to start on your
assignment. Homework will be checked at the beginning of the
next class period. Always have your
homework in your notebook, open, and ready to be checked as soon as class
starts. Warm-up problems will be on the overhead or television monitor
at the beginning of the period for you to begin working immediately.
NOTEBOOKS: Notebooks will be graded at the end of each
nine weeks. You will be given a handout with details concerning its
organization and grade calculation. You will also receive an
assignment sheet to list daily assignments and grades, as well as
quiz, test, and notebook grades.
QUIZZES: Short unannounced quizzes over the previous
day’s homework will be given at the discretion of the teacher. Quizzes over more than one section will be
announced one class period in advance. If you are absent for the
announcement, but were in class when the material was taught, you must take the
quiz with the class.
TESTS: Tests will be given at least once per
chapter and will be announced in advance. Chapter tests will be preceded
with a review day. If you are absent on the review day, you will still be
expected to take the test as scheduled.
TARDY
TO CLASS: When the tardy bell rings, you must be in
your seat ready to begin class. Deportment cuts will be given for tardies, according to school
policy—1st Tardy—5 pts, 2nd Tardy—5 pts., 3rd Tardy—5
pts, 4th Tardy—reported to the office.
ABSENCES:
YOU are responsible for completing any missed assignments and then showing
me your work within three days of an excused absence. EXEMPTION from semester exams will be given for two or fewer excused
absences per semester and at least a 78 average for the
semester. Unannounced quizzes over
one section only will not be made up—if the absence is excused, the student
will be exempt. If absent more than one day and additional time is needed for
makeup work, the student should discuss this with the teacher. An
unexcused absence will result in a zero for a missed quiz, homework grade, or
test.
EXTRA
HELP: If you need extra help, you may see me
before or after school. If you want before-school help, please let me
know a day in advance. We also have
peer tutoring available during your 4th period study hall time.
